Father's Day

In honor of Father's Day, I'm posting these pictures my father, Paul H. Elgin.

First, with me when I was a baby,

Next with me at my wedding,

And last, my portrait of him that I painted after his death.

Flag Day, 2011

13-Star Flag became the Official United States Flag on June14th, 1777

50-Star Flag by Executive Order of President Eisenhower dated August 21, 1959

“As we think back over the history of our nation’s flag, we remember that the story of its early years was often one of hardship and trials, sometimes a fight for simple survival. … As the American Republic grew and prospered and new stars were added to the flag, the ideal of freedom grew and prospered. From the rolling hills of Kentucky to the shores of California to the Sea of Tranquility on the Moon, our pioneers carried our flag before them, a symbol of the indomitable spirit of a free people. And let us never forget that in honoring our flag, we honor the American men and women who have courageously fought and died for it over the last 200 years, patriots who set an ideal above any consideration of self. Our flag flies free today because of their sacrifice. … These anniversaries remind us that the great American experiment in freedom and democracy has really just begun. They remind us of the terrible hardships our forefathers willingly endured for their beliefs. And they challenge us to match that greatness of spirit in our own time, and I know we will. We are, after all, the land of the free and the home of the brave.” –Ronald Reagan

Windows of Switzerland

It is said that the eyes are the windows to the soul. So it is with the windows of the house. They are a hint of the interior of the house.
The traditional mountain houses of Switzerland are beautiful. They display the skil of the carpenter's and joiner's craft. Each house is unique made with love, designed especially for the family that has lived there generation after generation. They are almost never sold to outsiders.

St. Gervais

We were walking in the 4th, when we came upon St. Gervais. This church is one of the oldest in Paris. Its existence at this place is mentioned as early as the fourth century. It was such a lovely setting. So peaceful after the noise and bustling people in the Notre Dame de Paris. Even though it was February relatively quiet, this corner of Paris was so still, and calm.
