Memorial Day, 2011

Remembering all those who have made it possible for us to live in freedom, today.
Old Glory flies above the American Cemetery in Normandy overlooking Omaha Beach

All were Americans first

We couldn't find out who these boys were. We surmised they might have been some sort of cadets or some form of French equivalent to ROTC. It was February and so cold - and they were wearing shorts!
We were privileged to have met the head of all the American cemeteries in Europe, who happened to be staying at the same hotel. He was a wealth of information, naturally, and was glad to share some of the history and facts with us. It was a wonderful, but touching day.

God Bless America

Priscilla, thank you for sharing these images. We were there in 1999. I can't think of a more moving place that I've ever been. We hope to return this year.

Sarah, Oh, fun. I would love to go back. I was lucky that trip to visit the town of my grandfather. He was from Avaranches which is on west of the D-Day beaches. It is on the bay looking out to Mont St Michel. He was born in 1865 and after coming to the US with his brother, they lost touch with all those in France. I was hoping to find someone there who was another cousin. The other ones we know are in Rouen.
I will look forward to reading about your next trip.

Those WW11 cemeteries are something to see. We've visited Vimy and others, and each is so moving.

Beautiful tribute with great photos! This reminds us of the young people that have given their lives for our country! Thank you for visiting me and for the fun comment!...yeah, I never miss O'Reilly...or Fox News, for that matter!...then how would I know what's going on in my country?! I also vote, all the way from here. We also watch CNN in Eng. and Spanish too, on Direct TV. Have a great weekend. Hugs. FABBY
